- DESCRIPTION:
This class is an introduction to the essential characteristics and structure of our Western writing. Students will develop "modern" and often playful graphic alphabets as a means to understanding the forms and unique characteristics of such traditional alphabets as italic, blackletter and humanistic bookhand. The exercises will provide the beginner with an overview from which to base further calligraphic practice; students with more experience will explore new ideas about the expressive potential of calligraphy
. All levels of lettering experience are welcome.
- SUPPLIES: Black ink (Higgins Eternal OR Pelikan Fount India OR Pelikan 4001), "Automatic" pens in sizes 3/4" 1/2", 1/4", pad of layout paper (14" x 17"), pencils, eraser, 18" metal ruler, cotton rag, and a small water jar for rinsing pens.
- BIO: THOMAS INGMIRE was the first American to be elected a Fellow of the prestigious Society of Scribes and Illuminators. A forerunner in the modern calligraphy movement, he has taught calligraphy since 1978, conducting workshops throughout the United States and Canada, in Europe, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. His work was the subject of Michael Gullick’s Words at Risk: The Art of Thomas Ingmire (1989) and Codici 1: a teacher’s notebook on modern calligraphy & lettering art (2003).
