BASIC CALLIGRAPHY COURSES AT FORT MASON
Roman capitals (also called Trajan and Imperial) were first carved into stone. Later they were adapted for writing with reed and pen on papyrus and parchment. These written letters were named Capitalis Quadrata (Square Capitals). In this class we will study the Square Capitals which are both historic and contemporary in their proportions. These elegant letterforms may be used for initial letters and titles; they mix well with many calligraphy styles, such as italic, uncial, etc. The letterforms provide an essential basis for flourished letters.
. All levels of lettering experience are welcome.*BASIC SUPPLIES* and additional or different supplies specified by each instructor are listed at the end of each class description. The term “Basic Supplies” refers to: black ink (Higgins Eternal or Pelikan Fount India), all sizes Brause pen nibs, one or two pen holders, pencil & eraser, 18”– 24” metal ruler, notebook, cotton rag, a small water jar.
